How to Stay Focused While Working from Home

Most of us have made the transition to working from home in one capacity or another. While our newfound freedom is great, many times it is difficult to remain focused in your new surroundings. Your new work environment now is mixed with your daily duties of kids, roommates, laundry and more. With distractions running rampant around you, here are 5 ways to stay focused while working from home.

Create a Home Office

Creating a home office is the best place to start when transitioning to working from home. While working from the bed, couch or dining table may be more convenient, having a dedicated space is key to productivity and staying focused while working from home.

Make a List

With a new environment and more distractions than ever, staying organized and on task is key. Making a list of what needs to be accomplished each day is an easy way to stay focused day in and day out. Creating your list the day before is a great way to make sure you’re not forgetting anything.

Structure Your Day

You have a structure to your day in the office, so why not create one at your home office? Set a schedule for your day at home. This may not mimic your schedule at the office, and that’s okay! Schedule time for lunch, yoga or even just a walk around the neighborhood. You have the flexibility to work your way and structuring your day is sure to help stay focused while working from home.

Limit Your Screen Time (Computer not Included)

While at home, it is easier to pull out your phone, watch daytime TV or hop on your favorite video game. Remember that even though you’re at home, you’re still on the clock. Limiting your exposure to time wasting media is a great way to stay focused.

Know When to Stop

A difficult part for many who work from home is the overwhelming feeling that you are always on the clock. It can be difficult to separate work life from your personal life when you’re constantly at home. Knowing when to stop to avoid burning out is important to the long term success of working from home. Finding the balance of when to work and when to relax is necessary to stay focused while working from home.
